spread, with great pleasure, the beautiful Carlo Flamigni letter addressed to the Rector of Bologna, which, I assume the follow-total silence: the silence of those who, not knowing "what the hell" answer (Cettola-all would say "what the fuck" but I refrain from writing it), he prefers to hide behind the silence.
"Courtyard of the Gentiles" letter to the rector of Bologna Carlo Flamigni
Dear RettoreSe remember correctly, in the past we have had almost the same views on many issues and policy at the University of which we discussed, although, I admit, we never addressed the topic "religion." But today, I read the Republic, which have concluded your speech at the meeting of the "Court of the Gentiles," as announced beginning of a dialogue between believers and unbelievers, saying that "Never before have there been no need for believers and atheists credible" and I am strongly disagree. In fact, I naturally reverse the sentence, without spoiling the nice play on words, and say that we all feel a strong need for credible believers and atheists (non-believers, agnostics, rationalists, agnostics, tout court, and so on). That the Church is very far from the Catholic believers and as less credible than before (and an acceptable standard of credibility) they say the facts: there are books on my desk, boasting prestigious authors, devoted to pedophilia, illegal trade of property, the failure to condemn the private brothels, and all call into question the very religion. I will not elaborate on these issues: I want to instead devote the conference that has just taken place in the "Court of the Gentiles" meeting that, if I remember correctly, you have much say appoggiato.Mi representatives dell''UAAR (Union of Atheists and agnostics and rationalists) have waited a long time by Cardinal Ravasi an invitation to the meeting, that they had naively imagined as a prime example of "island for foreigners moral", but in fact the invitation was never reached in the Cardinal described the 'Association "folk" and "quaint", by adding other epithets not very nice. Since is honorary president of this association (along with Laura Balbo, a Margherita Hack and other good people) I would like to export my personal point of view. This is certainly a phrase unhappy and rude, plus unnecessarily rude as the denial could have been otherwise motivato.E 'an insult even a bit' funny, a sort of authority on whether there reasons for a second, certainly you will come to my same conclusions. They are generally suspicious of rude people, usually hidden defects much more serious: in this case, not knowing the aforesaid Cardinal, I have to give him the benefit of the doubt, may have been misinterpreted or could have taken a wrong word in confusion of the meeting with journalists, who knows. The fact remains, and this is not over trifles, that the choice he made to engage the unbelieving world was, to say the least, disastrous: none of us felt the least represented, none of us appreciates the categories of devout atheists, humble, respectful, friendly, who have sold their souls to a God they do not believe, and you know that selling something you do not have a person who is not set up a series of crimes, including, the Finally, the reckless purchase. If I conclude, I believe that Cardinal Ravasi has failed its purpose (as long as its purpose is really to start a dialogue between believers and unbelievers) before it began, and this is much more serious and important gesture scortese.Ora I suggest to organize a similar meeting, but viewed from the non-believers. My opinion is to do it in another city, Bologna does not seem the most secular city that I knew as a young man and I say here, however, that it might be possible to have the support of the University and its Rector, considered by all a "Catholic layman." Of course I will invite only, among the believers, those who are willing to declare the intrinsic superiority of atheist thought about all religions, all representing the sect. Those who think otherwise, no, always for reasons of folklore. Will you come?
Love, Carlo Flamigni (published today on the issue of the insert of Bologna "Republic")
